Louisiana Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) Guide

Even though Louisiana is a Constitutional Carry state, obtaining a Louisiana CHP is highly recommended. It provides statutory reciprocity in 35+ states, bypasses NICS background check waiting times when buying guns, and clarifies carry rights in designated zones.

Step 1: Training

Complete an LSP-Approved 9-Hour Course

You must complete an official Louisiana State Police approved training course taught by a certified instructor. The course requires:

  • Minimum 9 hours total instruction (classroom + range).
  • Coverage of LA R.S. 14:19/20 self-defense laws, handgun safety, and child access prevention.
  • Live-fire qualification (36 rounds fired at 3, 5, and 7 yards under instructor supervision).
Step 2: Documentation

Gather Required Application Materials

  • Certificate of Completion from your LSP certified instructor.
  • Copy of valid Louisiana Driver's License or State ID card showing current physical address.
  • Electronic fingerprints (submitted at local Sheriff's office or LSP headquarters in Baton Rouge).
  • Military orders/DD-214 if applying for military fee discounts.
Step 3: Portal Submission & Fees

Submit Online & Pay Fees

Submit your completed application online through the official State Police portal at CHP.LA.GOV.

Official Statutory Fee Schedule:
  • 5-Year Permit: $125.00 (Standard) | $62.50 (Ages 65+ or Active Duty / Veterans)
  • Lifetime Permit: $500.00 (Standard) | $250.00 (Ages 65+ or Active Duty / Veterans)
  • Note: An additional $50 non-refundable background fee applies if you have not continuously resided in Louisiana for the past 15 years.
